Third Place Finish in New Era NIT

This weekend Powerhouse traveled to Leesburg for the New Era NIT.  Going in we knew this would be a tough event.  Powerhouse faced O-Town Patriots in the first game.  Powerhouse definitely wanted to win this one as we placed second to O-Town just a couple of weeks ago in Kissimmee.  Pedro and Alec both combined to pitch 3 innings in this game.  Jorge had a timely hit in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Powerhouse the win 5-4!

Next, Powerhouse took on the Gainesville Ghosts.  While this was our first meeting with this team, expectations were high as Brooks Walton plays for the Ghosts.  Brooks is the son of Pride Coach Tim Walton, and helped us out last year during the Global World Series.  Bradley pitched a solid first three innings giving up two runs behind some solid Ghost hitting.  Jorge took the mound next but had trouble finding a groove, lasting only 1/3 of an inning.  Brock finished out the six inning battle on the mound.  In the end, the Powerhouse bats were silenced by the Ghosts in a 6-3 loss.

A 1-1 record in pool play set Powerhouse up as the number 3 seed facing one of our biggest rivals, Orlando Panthers.  Alec took the mound for Powerhouse.  With Powerhouse leading 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Alec ran into some trouble.  Pedro came in and was able to get us out of the inning with the score tied 3-3.  Powerhouse bats were silenced in the top of the sixth.  The Panthers rallied in the bottom of the sixth, scoring the run they needed to win on a basehit with no outs.

Powerhouse will be off next weekend preparing for their upcoming trip to Atlanta.

Bombs Away in the War On I-4 Event

This week we traveled to Plant City for the War on I-4 event.  Powerhouse thought they had made it to the bigs when both pool play games on Saturday were scheduled in Plant City Stadium, former spring training home of the Reds.

Powerhouse faced the Tampa Titans Elite in the first pool play game.  Bradley took the mound for the first game as Powerhouse won the toss and elected to be home team.  The first inning started off rough when the first base ump blew the first call of the game at first base.  This was followed by a fielding error, giving the Titans two base runners.  The Titans were able to use a fielder's choice and basehit to score two runs in the top of the first.  The next two innings went quickly and Powerhouse was down 2-0 going into the bottom of the third.  Jorge led off this inning with a homerun.  This would be followed by another run and the game was tied 2-2 at the end of three.  Pedro stepped to the mound for the last half of this game.  A couple of errors and some timely hitting had the Titans adding adding to their score, but Powerhouse battled back, with Jorge hitting a second homerun in the fourth inning.  The game was tied heading into the top of the sixth.  In the top of the sixth, the Titans were able to take advantage of two walks and five basehits to add 5 runs to their score.  Powerhouse was only able to answer back with one run, yet another homerun by Jorge (that was three in one game!)  Powerhouse started off Saturday losing 11-7.

The second pool play game was against the Tampa Threshers.  Adams would take the mound for the Powerhouse who won the flip for the second game.  Carson relieved Adams in the fourth inning of this game.  The Threshers would take advantage of the five errors Powerhouse made in the field and won this game 7-5.  Powerhouse still cannot seem to put it all together on Saturday!

Sunday morning saw the Powerhouse facing the Rawlings Gators.  Alec received the call and pitched a four inning complete game as Powerhouse run-ruled the Gators 17-5 in four innings.  During this game, four different Powerhouse hitters had homeruns, including Adams the second batter in teh bottom of the first inning, giving us an early 2-0 lead as Brock was able to reach on a strike out dropped third strike.  In the bottom of the third, Alec helped himself with a solo shot.  With one out in the bottom of the third, Ty and Jorge hit back to back bombs.  Powerhouse bats were impressive in this game, scoring 5 runs each in the first and second inning and 7 runs in the third.

This set up a re-match between Powerhouse and Tampa Titans Elite.  Adams went to the hill for the Powerhouse.  The Powerhouse were down 3-0 after the first inning, but Powerhouse would hold them scoreless for the rest of the game.  Adams pitched four innings and Jorge came in for the final two innings.  Powerhouse bats were able to put up runs in all but the first and fourth innings, winning 5-3.  This win also gave Powerhouse a one game break before the Championship Game.

The Championship Game would feature Powerhouse vs South Florida Swamp Rats (who we run-ruled two weeks ago in the Lithia tournament).  Swamp Rats jumped out to an early 5-1 lead at the end of the first and never looked back.  Bradley gave up three runs on two hits and two walks in the top of the first before being replaced by Pedro as he left the game with a migraine.  Pedro, for the second week in a row, pitched well in the Championship Game but did not receive the run support needed, as the Powerhouse place second for the second week in a row, losing 8-2.

Join us next week for the New Era NIT in Leesburg!

Powerhouse 11U Reaches Final - Takes Second

Powerhouse competed in the President's Day Pandemonium NIT this weekend at Fortune Road Athletic Complex in Kissimmee.  Saturday during pool play, the Powerhouse faced the Orlando Warriors and the Miracles Navy Blue.

In the first game, Powerhouse struggled early, giving up 11 runs in the first two innings.  The Powerhouse fought back, but ran out of time losing 13-9 to the Orlando Warriors.

During the second game, Powerhouse faced the Miracles.  Powerhouse pitchers Bradley Brockwell, Carson Roe and Adams Torres all did a great job during this game holding the Miracles to only two runs.  However, the Powerhouse bats were quiet and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.  This left the Powerhouse at 0-1-1 at the end of pool play, putting the Powerhouse in the 5 seed with a hard road ahead on elimination Sunday.

Sunday morning saw a re-match of the last pool play game as Powerhouse had to face Miracles again.  This time, however, the Powerhouse bats were ready to roll.  Powerhouse scored 10 runs behind excellent pitching of Alec Condon, cruising to a 10-3 victory in 5 innings.

The Powerhouse then faced the top seeded Orlando Panthers, in a rematch of our first pool play game.  Adams Torres took the mound for Powerhouse.  Once again, the Powerhouse bats had come alive.  With some great pitching, great hitting and great defensive plays, the Powerhouse cruised to an 8-0 run-rule victory in 4 innings and moving on to the Championship game.

The Championship game featured the Powerhouse against the O-Town Patriots.  Pedro Figueroa took the hill for the Powerhouse, pitching 5 solid innings and only giving up one hit.  Powerhouse had four fielding errors and two balks which allowed the Patriots to score 3 runs.  The Patriots played great defensively - even though the Powerhouse was able to get 4 basehits, we were only able to manufacture one run after having a couple of players picked off.  The Powerhouse worked hard but finished second, losing 3-1.

A few of notable plays for the weekend - a fabulous catch by Jalen Townsend in centerfield falling over the temporary fence and saving a homerun.  Another great catch by Ty Hoyle in left field (even though the umpire incorrectly called it a trap).  Soid play in right field by Grume Rios on Sunday in a position he doesn't routinely play.  Bradley Brockwell catching all three games on Sunday, throwing out a runner trying to steal second, catching one sleeping at third and making a heads-up play at the plate to save a run after a wild pitch.

All in all, it was another great team effort.  Thanks to all the Powerhouse players, parents and fans for another great weekend at the park!

Powerhouse Wins UFC II NIT

Powerhouse competed in the Ultimate Florida Championship (UFC) II NIT this past weekend.  This was an important event as it was both an NIT and double points weekend.

Powerhouse started slowly on Saturday afternoon, losing their first pool play game to the South Lakeland Flying Tigers 9-3.  They rebounded during the second pool game, winning 8-5 over Brevard Thunder.

Powerhouse started their Sunday at 9 am against the hometown Fishhawk Wolves.  This game was also featured on Utrip-TV at http://www.floridautrip.com/.  Powerhouse started slow, giving up 4 runs in the top of the first, but rallied back to score 4 in the bottom half of the first.  With the bats coming alive, Powerhouse went on to a 13-9 victory in 5 innings.

Powerhouse then faced the South Florida Swamp Rats in the semi-final game.  Powerhouse had previously beaten the Swamp Rats in their only other match-up which occured in the 10U Global World Series last year.  Powerhouse came out strong and cruised to a 13-4 victory.

In the Championship game, Powerhouse faced the Central Florida Crushers.  Again, Powerhouse bats were alive and well during this game, including two bombs from slugger Ty Hoyle in the same inning!  Even better, one was a grand slam.  It only took 3.5 innings for the Powerhouse to run-rule the Crushers 15-7 in this decisive victory.

Every single Powerhouse player did a great job this weekend and should be proud of all their efforts!

For their win, Powerhouse players will be receiving batting jackets from Tyja Sports as part of the award package for this event.

Powerhouse Departs Early from A Poison New Year Tourney

Powerhouse opened the tourney on Saturday afternoon against the St. Pete Saints, losing 10-2.  Powerhouse rallied back in their second game, beating the Bullets Blue 9-6.  A 1-1 record left the Powerhouse team with an 8 am game on Sunday morning.

Powerhouse made an early exit on Sunday, January 30, from the A Poison New Year Tourney in Oldsmar losing their first game Sunday morning to the tournament host, Poison Baseball, 6-2.

Powerhouse Struggles Against O-Town Patriots

Powerhouse traveled to Winter Garden on Sunday, January 23, for a double header against the perennial powers O-Town Patriots.  Powerhouse started sluggish, used three pitchers and had several errors in Game 1, losing 14-2 in six innings.

Determined to improve on their performance, Powerhouse came out looking like a different team in Game 2.  The battery of Adams and Bradley worked well with Adams throwing 6 innings of the 7 inning game.  Carson Roe came in to pitch the last inning.  Overall, a much better defensive performance from the Powerhouse.  There were a couple of bright offensive spots with timely hitting from Ty, Adams and Bradley, however Powerhouse hitters were struck out 9 times in the second game, resulting in a tie game at 2-2 after 7 innings.

Powerhouse will be practicing this week in preparation for their tournament in Oldsmar next weekend.
